Emerald is the birthstone for May. A beautiful green colour, it also has a well known gemstone relative called Aquamarine. Emerald is rarely flawless, and often has inclusions which makes the gem so recognisable. A flawless Emerald therefore is a rare and valuable gem indeed. Often found in historical jewellery, Emeralds have a long history of being admired and revered by different cultures. They were mined in ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BC, and were associated with the goddess Isis. They were also prized by the Incas and Aztecs, who believed they had healing and spiritual powers. Emeralds are the birthstone for May, the gemstone for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries, and a symbol of spring, love, and fidelity .
